Gamájåhkå rapids

Gamájåhkå is a three-kilometre long rapids which empties into the delta area north of Kvikkjokk down to the village where it joins the Tarra River. Together the two rivers form the delta of Kvikkjokk.

During the summer the water is greyish-green from the glacier sediments from Pårte Massif. The water level can vary three meters from low and high water levels. There is a path that goes a distance along the rapids. At times there are storm-felled trees that block the way. To hike up to the delta area above Gamájåhkå it is better to go on the dirt road which goes parallel with the rapids to the north.

The road is easy to walk on and at times goes through forest areas that were clear-cut and at times goes through the Kamajokk Nature Reserve. The reserve, which is on both sides of the rapids, consists on the eastern side of old growth spruce forest and boulders. The hiker has a panoramic view towards the Pårte Mountains in Sarek and Valle’s Peak in the Tarrakaise Massif. After four kilometres the Njáhkájåhkå creek empties into the rapids and after one more kilometre to the north is Änoks delta area.
