The Ancient Remains in Kvikkjokk
|
In the middle of the 1600s silver was discovered in Padjelanta and Sarek. By the Kamajokk rapids a silver smelter was built to process the mined silver ore. There was both wood for fuel and water here to run the smelter. In the proximity of the smelter about twenty buildings were erected, including a dwelling for the priest. This became the beginning of Kvikkjokk.
|
The ancient remains are to be found mainly on the western side of the Kamajokk rapids. That is also where the old cemetery was placed. Still today the hay there is cut by scythe and placed on hay drying racks. Other precautions are taken for the care of ancient remains.
We give tours of the area as well as lectures about the times of the silver smelter and the history of Kvikkjokk. A tour here can easily be combined with a hike up to the Prinskullen.
Contact us when you are in town or by telephone for a boat ride across the river. It is also possible to take the the regular tour to the Padjelanta Trail.
