Kvarntjärnarna, the Mill Ponds, near Kvikkjokk

Kvarntjärnarna

At Kvarntjärnsbäcken, the Mill Pond Creek, which runs into Tarra River four kilometres west of Kvikkjokk there is a mill which was restored in the 1970s. It was formerly used to grind barley. The grain was rowed up the river and was carried the last two kilometres.
At the beginning the path goes alongside the Tarra River and the southwest part of the Kvikkjokk delta. Then it turns off into the coniferous forest and passes the mill. The hike then continues along Kvarntjärnsbäcken to the headwater at Kvarntjärnarna, the Mill Ponds. The difference in altitude is small and the path is easy to walk. The ponds are surrounded by old growth forest. The water is clear. By Kvarntjärnarna there is a windbreak and a place to make a fire. The trajectory from the boat landing to the ponds is about two kilometres.

The tour to Kvarntjärnarna can be combined with a tour up to Nammatj.

Contact us when in Kvikkjokk or by telephone for a boat tour up along the Tarra River. It is also possible to take the regular tour to the Padjelantaleden.
